Lionel Messi gave FC Barcelona a 1-0 win at Getafe CF on Saturday to maintan their six-point lead in the Liga over second-placed Real Madrid CF who triumphed 1-0 at RC Recreativo de Huelva.
Deflected winner
Messi struck his 20th league goal this season after 19 minutes in a dominant Barça display at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez to seal the UEFA Champions League semi-finalists' sixth straight victory in the Spanish top flight. The Argentina forward picked up Xavi Hernández's pass in the area, skipped around a group of defenders and struck a deflected shot that had enough power to beat goalkeeper Vladimir Stojković.
Capital gains
Brazilian defender Marcelo scored the only goal as Madrid accounted for relegation-threatened Recreativo, keeping Barcelona in range ahead of their meeting at the Santiago Bernabéu in two weeks' time. City rivals Club Atlético de Madrid won 3-0 at home to struggling Numancia and moved up to fourth place, above Valencia CF on goal difference, thanks to second-half strikes from midfielder Éver Banega, striker Diego Forlán and winger Simão.
Didier Drogba's strike six minutes from time earned Chelsea FC a 2-1 victory against London rivals Arsenal FC in the first FA Cup semi-final at Wembley and ended the Gunners' hopes of a first domestic trophy since 2005.
Lively encounter
Having prevented Arsenal from falling behind early on when he raced back to clear Drogba's goal-bound header, Kieran Gibbs teed up the opener for Theo Walcott on 18 minutes, floating a ball to the far post for the England striker to place a side-foot volley across Petr Čech. Chelsea had played their part in an open contest, though, and equalised a quarter of an hour later when Florent Malouda collected Frank Lampard's raking crossfield pass, cut inside Emmanuel Eboué and beat Łukasz Fabiański at his near post. The pace was unrelenting and moments later Nicolas Anelka capitalised on Abou Diaby's hesitancy and curled a shot against the post.
Drogba goal
Despite both clubs being in UEFA Champions League action in midweek, winning quarter-final ties, the tempo remained high early in the second half and Walcott's low ball across the Chelsea area just evaded the sliding Robin van Persie, before Lampard volleyed Drogba's cross wide. However, just when the tie looked to be drifting towards extra time, Drogba raced on to Lampard's long ball, rounded the onrushing Fabiański and rolled the ball into the empty net to earn the Blues their first FA Cup victory over Arsenal since 1947 and their ninth final appearance. Everton FC tackle Manchester United FC in the second semi on Sunday, with the final to be played on 30 May – three days after the UEFA Champions League showpiece in Rome.
Theo Walcott confirmed his status among England's brightest attacking talents with an inspirational display in Arsenal FC's 3-0 defeat of Villarreal CF last night and reflected that his long injury absence earlier this season may have helped mature him as a player.
Early goal
Walcott had already menaced the Villarreal defence several times with his pace and touch when he deftly chipped Arsenal into a tenth-minute lead on their way to clinching a 4-1 aggregate success and a UEFA Champions League semi-final against Manchester United FC. And the winger, who only turned 20 on 16 March – a week after returning from four months out with a shoulder dislocated on England duty – underlined that his early goal was the key on what initially appeared a tense night.
'Blew them away'
"I think if you are not nervous, you are not right," Walcott said. "The first goal helped calm everybody down and from then we blew them away. They didn't get many opportunities but they are a good team when they can get it down and pass the ball. We were aware of that and we played brilliantly."
New perspective
Wednesday's goal came only four days after Walcott had scored for the first time since his shoulder operation at Wigan Athletic FC, but he believes he has learned a lot about the game during his enforced absence. "You get a different perspective on watching the game when you're injured," he said. "I've been watching things [from the stands] and I can see the whole pitch, see how we play football."
Injuries
Several of Walcott's club-mates, including goalkeeper Manuel Almunia and defenders William Gallas and Johan Djourou. watched the Villarreal game from the sidelines due to injury, and the winger knows it has been a bit of a theme for Arsenal recently. "William's been brilliant for us this year, Johan got a knee problem, Almunia – we've been so unlucky with injuries this year, but the players that come in do a fantastic job as we've shown tonight," Walcott said.
Cristiano Ronaldo's spectacular winning goal will have grabbed the headlines but Wayne Rooney was quick to commend Manchester United FC's all-round team performance after their 1-0 quarter-final win at FC Porto on Wednesday night.
'More solid'
United put their recent defensive wobbles behind them to earn their first shutout since 11 March and, in truth, they seldom looked like losing the lead given them by Ronaldo's sixth-minute strike. Rooney told uefa.com: "I thought we looked a lot more solid tonight. The last few weeks defensively we have been open and have conceded a lot of sloppy goals. We'd looked at the goals we conceded and they were poor goals to give away. We knew we had to get it right if we wanted to win the trophies we are involved in. Tonight was a bit similar to [the semi-final against] Barcelona last season where we defended really well, but we nicked a goal tonight to win the game."
Compact
Porto may have had 17 goal attempts but they managed only four on target – compared with ten in the 2-2 first-leg draw in Manchester. Nemanja Vidić said: "The difference between the first and the second leg was we defended as a team, we were compact." The Serbian also underlined the importance of defensive partner Rio Ferdinand's return from injury, adding: "Rio brought confidence to the team, he played well. I was happy to have him next to me."
Confidence
It was not just at the back that United impressed. The defending champions looked dangerous when they attacked, with both Ryan Giggs and Rooney himself – tireless in a wide role – catching the eye. "If you defend well then you always have opportunities on the counterattack," said Rooney. "I thought we had two or three good opportunities in the second half and maybe could have nicked another goal but the main thing is we went through. We have two difficult games against Arsenal [in the semi-finals] who we know are a good team but you have to be confident in yourself and hopefully we can get to that final."
